Disability Wales is reviewing the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Disabled People in Wales and we are looking for evidence submissions about the UNCRDP and disability rights in Wales.
What is the UNCRDP?
CRDP is an international human rights treaty adopted in 2006. The UK ratified (agreed to follow) CRDP in 2009. You can learn more about it here.
By ratifying CRDP, the UK agrees to protect and promote the human rights of disabled people, including:
· eliminating disability discrimination
· enabling disabled people to live independently in the community
· ensuring an inclusive education system
· ensuring disabled people are protected from all forms of exploitation, violence and abuse
Following years of campaigning from disabled people and Disability Wales, the Welsh Government committed to incorporating the CRDP into Welsh Law in their Programme for Government.
Why are Disability Wales looking into this?
As it has been ratified by the UK, the UN Committee on Disability Equality conducts a review into the UNCRDP in the UK every five years. Due to delays, the first review was held in 2017 and the next is due to be held in 2022.
Disability Wales is writing a shadow report into the UNCRDP in Wales and in order to get as much information from as wide a variety of sources as possible, we are putting out an open call for evidence on this topic.
Submission guidelines
Evidence can be handed in any format, including word document, pdf or audio file. Be that a report you think we should read, testimony that you want to give us or information from your organisation.
Please ensure that you write “DW UNCRDP Evidence” in the email subject line, to help ensure that your email is not missed.
The deadline for submissions is 22/11/2021. If you cannot make that deadline for whatever reason, please get in touch with us before the deadline date.
