The latest rules and restrictions

After more than two years of living with coronavirus regulations, these expired on Monday 30 May 2022 as the legal requirement to wear a face covering in Welsh health and care settings ended.  

Welsh Government recommends people to continue wearing face coverings, unless exempt, in health and care settings and to self-isolate if you have coronavirus symptoms to keep Wales safe.

Testing

Welsh Government has confirmed that access to free lateral flow tests will be extended in Wales until July 31st 2022. Tests will be available to the public that are showing symptoms of coronavirus and for people visiting someone eligible for new COVID-19 treatments.

Shielding

As Wales moves beyond the emergency response to the pandemic, the shielding programme ended on 31 March 2022. Those who are considered clinically vulnerable are eligible for new treatments and continue to be prioritised for vaccines.

The Pfizer BioNTech, Oxford Astra Zeneca and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines have been approved for use. They are safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines which can be used in Wales. Rapid COVID-19 self-testing kits (lateral flow tests) are now available for unpaid carers. Asymptomatic testing is an important way to keep people safe and can provide reassurance as restrictions ease. Find out more.

Welsh Government have published their Safer Public Places during Covid-19 – Wales Guidance. It is a framework for identifying the issues associated with the use of public places in light of the need for social distancing. The guidance is also available in Welsh.

Bevan Commission has launched its Distance Aware campaign, endorsed by the Welsh Government. This is a national initiative to enable individuals and organisations to politely prompt ongoing distancing and respect of individual social space.

The Older People’s Commissioner for Wales has published a new COVID-19 guidance pack, providing a range of useful information and resources about keeping older people safe. It includes some ways to identify older people who may be at risk, as well as contact details for key organisations that can provide crucial help and support.
